Fiber optics in its infancy were surprisingly first thought
of by the father of the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell.
When Mr. Bell created the “Photophone” in approximately
1880 he utilized light to transmit sound.
Then in 1888, William Wheeler furthered this infant idea
of Fiber optics to create actual lighted pipes that illuminated
light offering an alternative to electric lighting and gaslights
for the home. David Smith evolved the fiber optic conception
further by inventing a lighted glass rod for the purpose
of using in surgery providing a bright light that is so
essential to any surgical procedure.
Fiber optics continued to follow its path of development
throughout the years until Heinrich Lamm whom was a German
medical student was forward thinking enough to bundle several
strands of fiber optics together to create the first version
of a fiber optic wire.
Fiber optics continued to develop until the 1970’s
when a research team was experimenting with fused silica
enabling them to create the fiber optic wire, as we know
it today
